Heritage Marker SB21 - Thian Hock Kheng Temple
Learn more about Chinatown's rich history by visiting our Heritage Markers. Installed at places of historical significance around Chinatown, each plaque provides a short history of the location in three languages - English, Simplified Chinese and Japanese.

Thian Hock Keng began as a humble joss house in 1821-22. It was erected in honour of Ma Zu Po, the Protector of Sojourners, and Chinese immigrants would go there to offer thanks for a safe passage. Between 1839 and 1842, the joss house was rebuilt as Thian Hock Keng Temple by philanthropist Tan Tock Seng. Constructed with traditional techniques, Thian Hock Keng is supported entirely on iron and wooden posts, with no nails in any part of the main structure. In the main prayer hall, the shrine of the Queen of Heaven occupies the central place. She is flanked by Guan Ti, the God of War, and Bao Sheng Da Di, the Protector of Life. In the rear courtyard is an altar to Guan Yin, the Goddess of Mercy.

It was in this new temple that the biggest Hokkien clan association - the Hokkien Huay Kuan - was born. It played a particularly important role in Chinese education, setting up one of Singapore's most prestigious Chinese schools, Tao Nan. Devotees today continue to flock to the temple, asking for favours from the gods.
