stories of chinatown
a different kind of weekend

Tired of your usual weekend hangouts? Feeling jaded walking through mall after mall, passing by the same shops that populate pretty much every shopping centre in Singapore? Or simply looking for a different way to spend your weekend? Well then, you're in luck!

Retail therapists will be thrilled by the selection of unique and intriguing fashion outlets in Chinatown. With indie boutiques such as Asylum, De Walk-in Wardrobe, Rose Citron and more, you'll be able to find that distinct piece that perfectly matches your style and image. There are also many shops that sell imported and designer furnishings, such as Trolley, Hidden Treasure, and Pomelo Home, if you're looking to spice up your home or room.

Foodies too will find themselves well taken care of in Chinatown. You can indulge in some decadent cakes and pastries at cafes and bakeries such as Kki, P.S. Café and The Patissier, grab a taste of authentic Chinese cuisine at eateries such as Chong Qing Grilled Fish, Da Dong Restaurant and Eight Treasures Vegetarian, or wine and dine to the finest international fare at restaurants such as Broth, Candlenut Kitchen, Magma German Wine Bistro & Restaurant and Oso Ristorante. There are plenty more stalls, eateries and restaurants waiting for you to discover in Chinatown. Check our directory for more!

For those who love hunting down interesting little trinkets, accessories, or building that personal look from a variety of pre-loved and new clothings, head down to Pagoda Street every weekend and shop your heart out at the Chinatown Car Boot Flea! Located right next to the landmark Sri Mariamman Temple and less than a minute's walk from the Chinatown MRT station, the Chinatown Car Boot Flea is held every weekend from 2pm to 10pm. There, you'll find everything from clothes to shoes, to unique accessories for your mobile phone. And with different tenants every time, you'll never know what you'll find each time you head down! Catch a glimpse of the Car Boot Flea in our special video feature this month. If you've collected for yourself a little too many trinkets, or have some odds and ends you wish to sell, you can also sign up for a space at the Car Boot Flea - visit this page to find out more.

And if you're looking to pick up a new hobby or try something really different, there are also plenty of unique classes and courses that you can pick up in Chinatown, such as cooking, photography, music, dance, theatre - you can even learn the art of Nanyin, a traditional musical genre that combines string and pipe instruments such as the Pipa, Sanxian, Dongxiao and Erxian, to form unique melodies. Siong Leng Musical Association holds regularly weekly classes that teach Nanyin music to anyone who is interested in learning, young and old alike. In fact, you'll be surprised at how young their students can be! You can also check out our video feature on Siong Leng Musical Association and Nanyin to find out more.

Whether it’s eating, shopping, chilling out or taking part in activities, you’ll find something old, something new, and something different at Chinatown. So remember - if you find yourself fancying something a little out of the ordinary, look no further than Chinatown for a different kind of weekend!
