7th Month Festival

What is 7th Month Festival?

The Hungry Ghost Festival is one of the important festivals in Chinese traditions. It falls on the seventh month of the Chinese lunar calendar, and is also known as the Seventh Month (七月) or Ghost Month (鬼月).

It is believed that the ghosts of Chinese ancestors are released from hell on the first day of the seventh lunar month. It is known to be the scariest month of the year for thousands of years because the ghosts are believed to take revenge on those who have behaved badly according to Taoist records. They roam around looking for entertainment from the many months of boredom in hell. One of the traditional beliefs is to avoid swimming or being alone at night lest an enemy ghost comes after them.

However, some people also believe that the gates of heaven also open during this month, and they worship their ancestors from heaven too.
